When people need this

A selfie is almost always a mirror image, and a mirrored selfie means the text on your shirt is backwards. Documents scanned from the back of a transparent sheet come out mirrored too. Flipping is also how you fix a photo where the subject looks the wrong way for the layout — a portrait that should face into the page instead of out of it.

How big the file gets

A flip moves pixels around, so the file is re-encoded once. Size stays within roughly 10% of the original at quality 92 — it will not double, and the dimensions do not change at all.

Why flipping twice gives you the original back

A mirror is its own inverse: applying the same axis twice is the identity. Flipping horizontally and then vertically is the same operation as rotating 180°, which is why the two controls live on one page instead of two. There is no cumulative drift because the transform is exact — no interpolation involved.

Frequently asked questions

Does flipping reduce quality?
The flip itself is a pure pixel rearrangement. The file is re-encoded once, which is one generation of JPEG loss at quality 92 — invisible in practice.
Can I flip and rotate in one pass?
Rotate on the rotate page, flip here — or use the rotate page’s flip buttons, which apply both in a single encode.
Why is my selfie mirrored?
Phone cameras show you a mirrored preview so moving left feels like moving left, and some of them save that mirrored version. A horizontal flip puts the text back to normal.
